Tell him to hang on. There really are people that feel like him that end up
happy after going through hell for a few years. There’s no shame in seeking help through therapy and/or medication.

IMO, many people that commit suicide lose hope and believe it will never get better. It absolutely can get better.

Also, as was mentioned in more than one talk last conference, repentance doesn’t mean you quit every sin cold turkey and you’ve failed if you slip. We need to focus on micro improvements and micro goals and cut ourselves slack when we backslide.
