The upside: A bunch of players you hope have career years just to be competitive offensively and to help the team reach the .540 winning percentage that the org is trying to squeak by. The leadership hopes to sneak into the playoffs and win a game or two and call it a great season because the team has sucked for so long.
The downside: The wheels come off and you're a below .500. Of course, leadership will then talk about the great draft position they're in.
I'm tired of this BS. I became a fan in the 90's when the team actually spent money to try to win and it turned out some great players and teams. It hasn't been the same since about 2003. It is astonishing that the M's (the 13th most valuable team in MLB) is the ONLY team never to have reached the WS. That includes other teams that have come into the league AFTER the Mariners. It is sad and this leadership group is not going to get them there and even sadder...don't seem interested in achieving that.
