Agreed. Even in instances of actual targeting it rarely seems malicious
I can't remember the last BYU targeting penalty I saw where I thought "Wow, BYU is dirty, throw that player out of the game!" Maybe one of the hits by Kai Nacua years and years ago?

And the same is true of most games where I don't have a strong rooting interest against the team committing the targeting penalty. We're at a point now where the Vontaze Burficts of the world have pretty much aged out of the sport; we have the attention of the athletes, they know these hits are penalties and have adjusted their play accordingly.

Just like we reached a point where we no longer need to send players to the locker room, I think we've now reached a point where an ejection for the first targeting penalty is no longer necessary.
