It's not in the rulebook as noted in the OP and the "gentleman's agreement" reference. It has come to mean that through
custom over time. What Beamer did wasn't against the rules but definitely goes against the spirit of what that unwritten rule has come to mean. You are right it's not in the rule book but it's definitely dirty pool if done intentionally. It's ok if you didn't know that. Nothing to be embarrassed about.
