We waited until our oldest was 16 before letting her have a phone and she was pretty responsible with it. We knew she would be.

Our 2nd oldest also waited until 16 before letting her buy a phone, but our (then 14 year old) 3rd daughter was a le to buy a flip phone. 2nd daughter did not do well and became addicted to the phone (though she didn't even have any social media). 3rd daughter did okay until she bought a smart phone when she was 16.

Flip phones for daughters 4, 5, and then 6 starting when they turned age 13-ish. Grades went down even with #5 who was always super into school.
Daughter #6 couldn't handle it. She was texting HUNDREDS of texts almost every day. We ended up taking her phone from her.
