I think some of it is a product of age
I’m the same age and my recovery period is just longer, especially after runs. Not as much soreness with weights but I don’t do lower body weights or heavy weights. I just strain muscles when I try that and can get toned legs just running three times a week. I do try to work core and back and that helps with those muscle groups, making sure they’re lean and mean and working out soreness.
