I can see both sides. $24,000 likely means the insurance company pays out more
to that family than is received in premiums. Especially when you factor in the other uses the family probably made over the course of the year.

If it were the case that, like car insurance, most people weren't receiving payments that exceeded premiums, that's no problem. But many people receive care that far exceeds their premiums.

Yes, insurance companies make money. Mostly because there are a ton of insured people. And insurance companies profiting isn't inherently evil.

If it were up to me I'd give the girl the arm. I'd also give out a lot of other stuff and whatever insurance fund I worked for would be insolvent.
