BYU needs to create a blanket policy for the athletic department on how to respond to hate speech.
If the NCAA is not going to involve itself the University will need to step in.
FIFA, an organization known for its endless scandals, is doing more to address hate speech than the NCAA. That speaks VOLUMES.
This isn’t about comparing the LDS Church to other religions or marginalized groups. It’s about zero tolerance for hate speech at institutions of higher learning.
It’s not right for the athletes to be put in front of cameras on the national stage and then have thousands of people screaming text book hate speech.
It’s starting to become a common occurrence and eventually the team is going to justifiably walk off the court.
Edit: brief definition of hate speech. This seems needed I guess:
"Hate speech is speech that demeans, insults, or threatens individuals or groups based on attributes such as race, religion, ethnicity, sexual orientation, disability, gender, or other protected characteristics. While hate speech is not explicitly defined under U.S. law, it is generally understood as language intended to incite hatred, discrimination, or violence against a specific group of people."
