Consolidation will happen, probably to something like 36 or 40 teams that are really willing to go all in. Heck, the SEC and B1G are flirting with that already, and we might very well get there in a practical sense in another few years when the ACC GOR is closer to its end and those two conferences can stomach the penalties associated with poaching the last big brands.
It’s going to be a mad scramble, and there are some SEC and B1G programs that probably won’t make the cut (Rutgers, Maryland, Vanderbilt, Mississippi State). BYU and Utah could very easily find themselves on the outside looking in, trying to have fun in a “best of the rest” sort of situation. Not so far fetched when you consider that that’s basically where they already are.
