We spent multiple days in boston and had plenty to do with no car. The public transit is good enough we didn't have any problems. Also, we spent the second half of our trip going up into Maine and of course we rented a car then. Even going out to Cambridge to see Harvard we didn't need a car. If you're going beyond that, it may make sense, but just for the day.
