There's a bunch of potential reasons...none of which we control or at worth worrying about

I know a lot here don't think Jay Hill would leave BYU for USU, but a lot depends on things we simply don't and can't know.

I don't think money is too much an issue one way or the other. He's been reported to be making about $1M per year. He was making $300k at Weber St, and the USU coach was making somewhere between $1.3M and $1.6M - how much USU have to spend on their next coach depends on if they can get away without a buyout

There's a bunch of hypothetical reasons (that may or may not apply) that Jay Hill could choose to take the USU job:

  • He may have found (purely hypothetical, just as an example) that he prefers to control of being a HC more than being a coordinator.
  • After a rough 2024 season, he could be worried that Kalani is on the hot seat and his job security is in danger (this is likely at least partly why Burgess moved back to BYU)
  • Or after a surprisingly strong 2024 season and another big long extension for Kalani, he could see his path blocked at both BYU and Utah (Scalley), and figure USU is the best in-state option available

Of course those aren't the only hypotheticals, just some that would point to taking that job. Here's some others

  • After a rough 2024 season (mostly due to offense), Kalani is on the hot seat and Jay Hill is seen as the likely replacement if BYU doesn't fix things
  • After a rough 2024 season (including the defense), USU isn't as interested in Jay Hill as they might have been now

And that's just considering the USU head coach role. We haven't even gotten into the possibility of Whittingham retiring, Scalley taking over up there and Utah coming after Hill as DC. I don't think they would, likely would tab Shah or Swan instead, but it's another possibility that could throw a wrench in it

Bottom line, nothing is happening until after this season anyway, and what happens this season will impact all those decisions, so it's simply not worth freaking out about
