Don't burden the kids with that. Just take the dog to the grocery store
with you, show him the produce section and leave him there. Nobody will even notice, as long as he gets along with other dogs.

I don’t think they understand at all. If you say goodbyes it will get them anxious because it’s not part of the routine.
