The right way to do it (if you are worried)... is to let the dog stay with them on short visits, and work your way up.
Or just drop the dog off... It's a dog. They only want comfort, food, and attention.

I don’t think they understand at all. If you say goodbyes it will get them anxious because it’s not part of the routine.
