Just sit down with the dog and have a long chat to explain the whole situation. I'm sure he/she will understand
completely and it will all work out.
Seriously, though, it'll probably mess up the dog for a few days, but it will adapt as long as your kids interact with it.

I don’t think they understand at all. If you say goodbyes it will get them anxious because it’s not part of the routine.
