Treating dogs like humans can cause all sorts of problems. According to Cesar
Millan (the dog whisperer), both leaving and returning home should be non-emotional, silent events (as if you were going from one room in your house to another).

I don’t think they understand at all. If you say goodbyes it will get them anxious because it’s not part of the routine.
