If you as a manager are a tightwad about how PTO is used, then
You're a bad manager.

Let me specific: If you've an employee that has let's say a dentist appt to get their teeth cleaned or a follow up to have a cavity filled, crown, etc. and the appt is only going to be 1-2 hrs if you REALLY require your employee to ask for PTO just for that, then you suck. I tell employees..."save your PTO for vacation or when you have a real medical emergency or are going to be out for 1/2 day or more."

Basically my rule of thumb is if you're gonna be gone for more than 3 hours, then yes please put in a PTO request, otherwise just let me know and appropriately block out your calendar for the time you'll be gone. I refuse to micro-manage. I just won't do it.

PTO Nazi's who insist PTO be tracked down to the very minute or hour are the absolute worst.

Now if you've got an employee who abuses this, then that's different right? Also, it's probably not the kind of employee you want.

In other words: Don't micro manage. Just be a normal person. Thanks for coming to my TedTalk.
