Nice work. I would disagree about not lifting weights at the start
Adding muscle mass (and beginner gains can be substantial) can increase your resting metabolic rate. And can be rewarding in the mirror, which provides a psychological boost to help motivated the dieting aspect.

You're right that working out will increase one's appetite. Which may make the scale move slower. But it doesn't have to if you carefully track calories.
