You get a mix. The Onaqui herd (and others in Utah) have blood dating back to

Spanish horses from way back when. But those herds have been added to over the centuries from numerous sources like army mounts escaping, prospectors losing animals, and modern day horse owners just turning their horses loose out in the desert because they can't afford to keep them.
