My first home was a 1200 square foot townhouse. I was a new physician then so perhaps the mortgage at 16% was a little less percent of my income but it's not as dramatic as you think it might be.
In contrast, my son and nearly all his friends in Utah their first homes re over 3000 square feet single family homes.
