By rule, he absolutely deserved the ejection
If you have a problem with the ejection, then you have a problem with the way the rules are written. The refs are there to enforce the rules. soccer is even stricter when it comes to head/neck contact in an altercation. If I were to make up the rules I am not sure that would be an ejection in my book but I can see where they are coming from. It is very difficult to draw a line when you factor in severity of the contact and opposing players actions.
