1) depth. Depth will take time as we get more P4 recruits. It took Utah many seasons to get P4 depth. Our 1s can compete with their 1s, but there starts to get a drop from 2s and 3s.
2) injuries. Our O line at the end of the season was decimated with injuries. This greatly affected the ASU, Kansas, and Houston games. Towards the end of the season we were starting to thin at lots of positions. This is related, but different than depth right now. Bywater was hurt before the season started. Injuries exacerbate the depth issue. If we had fewer injuries or more depth, I think we would have won at least one of ASU/KU.
2) expectations. You expected to see a 4 win BYU team this year. How sad for you to not be able to enjoy a 10 win season. Is it sad we missed the conference championship game? Yes. ...but how sad for you to not think EVERYONE overachieved this season. Retzlaff was projected as the worst QB in the conference. He was in the top 1/3. Hopefully as a senior he can improve upon this year.
3) defense vs offense. Our defense and offense came out flat against ASU. You seem to be able to give Hill all the credit for the improvement from a projected 4 win season to a 10 win season. Bronco had a stat that if you scored 24 points you won most all your games. ASU scored 28 against us and won (4 teams during the season scored 24 or more). That wasn't all on the offense. The defense also played poorly for the first half - but both had great 2nd halfs. Our defense couldn't get off the field at ASU. Skattebo averaged 5.2 yards on 28 carries for 3 touchdowns. The defense has plenty of culpability in that loss.
4) living in the 80s. Let's be real. You're living in 1984. You talk of 'revolutionizing the offense' like that's something done every few years and that BYU did it more than once. You talk of QBU - again, living in the 80s. If you ever want to join us in reality outside of the 1979-1984 run, you're welcome to join us anytime. If you didn't live through that 5 year period, then this year has the potential to have as many wins as you've ever seen. How can you look at the results of being 10-2 and think this is subpar?!
5) grass is always greener. If we could only get rid of Robert Anae as OC and replace him with Brandon Doman. Doman will be incredible. He's a former QB, amazing football IQ, will recruit better than ever before. Wait...did that happen and it didn't work? Ok, let's promote Jeff Grimes...he'll be amazing. CB tells me he was struggling and eventually didn't call plays, but that ARod was the one calling the plays and was saving the offense. I'm glad for you that you're 'confident' that the next hire will be amazing. Unfortunately, I'm sure you haven't always been correct in your coaching analysis. The grass isn't always greener. I bet you sure were excited to get Gary Crowton, though...am I right?!
So yes, call me crazy. Firing the coaching staff that is currently producing one of a handful of 10+ win seasons (and counting) doesn't seem like the smartest thing to do.
