I understand what you are saying, but…
1) It doesn’t elevate our status long term if they win the conference during those 5 years like Oklahoma and Texas did and then they leave.

2) You can break up the ACC by grabbing other teams first (the four corners model). This is where it’s eventually going.

The only short term benefit might be an increase in TV revenue for the 5 years. But that is offset by the cost to buy them out of their legal issues.

The other cost is that we lose access to the CFP because FSU and Clemson would be likely to grab those spots. It would be fine if they were permanent members, but they aren’t. And the minute they leave, we look like a weaker conference than we were before.

On the flip side, if we don’t let them in and then one of our teams makes the CFP and makes a splash, it adds to our reputation and strength.
