Doctors, not lawyers, determine the standard of care in medicine.
While I don't know the particulars of that case, I'm sure man who fell had a medical condition which made him a fall risk, and as such he should have been given a sensor floor mat because that's the standard of care for that area.
In other words, any competent and skilled physician in that part of the country would have placed a sensor floor mat next to the bed of any patient with that exact same medical condition because that's the "standard of care" as determined by other physicians.
