I don’t see the problems you describe
My kids are able to be present and aren’t anxious about things like that. Might have something to do with us not allowing any social media.
They essentially have the ability to text and call with some apps that aren’t addictive (weather, stocks, etc). Everything else is locked down. We start them on old non-smart phones for a year before graduating them to locked down smartphones too so that might also help.

We usually start with Gabb and then move to iphone when they're 16. But Gabb GPS sucks and at time (maybe still)
