I think they are often part of the problems caused by elitist programs in CFB, but I never thought of them as a freeloader. They have a genuinely top shelf brand and a great competitive history. They also maintained national relevance outside a conference, which might be harder than doing it inside one. They're not some legacy Big10 school who gets a huge TV contract after a century of consistent losing. They more than anyone have to kill what they eat, I would think.
