I think this is how the NBA does it, especially with a 7 game series.

In a one-and-done situation, I don't think you can always stick to the averages.

For example, in last years NBA Finals Boston beat Dallas 4-1. Dallas blew them out by 38 points in game 4....but over the course of the series, the systems played out and the Celtics had an easy victory.
