I'd love to see the team get guys who are content to come off the bench and learn the system, then become stars in year two. It seems like we already have some of those guys on the roster today (Koz, Mboup, Crawford, and Staton), That said, I really trust KY and his staff. My opinion doesn't mean squat. It will be fun to see who they go after and how those players fit in to the team.
This year, in the transfer portal, it feels like the coaches really are playing with house money. As many others have already said, you have AJ coming in and scouts will be watching every BYU game next year. Who WOULDN'T want to play on a team with AJ? You're going to get noticed. It's the perfect opportunity for guys looking for that kind of exposure. Add onto that the fact that KY and his staff have really exceeded expectations this year and proven that they have "it", honestly, I don't know how anyone doesn't want to come to BYU.
I understand that last statement will trigger Utes and dairy Utes. I know there are players out there, the Mark Popes and Utes, people who will always have someone else or another place higher on their list of places to go (anything not BYU) - I'm not talking about those players. I'm referring to the players in the portal who don't care where they go, but they have the intelligence to see a great opportunity when it presents itself, wherever that may be. There are only a handful of schools that present the kind of opportunity that BYU has next year. Add to that the opportunity for a high level transfer to come and get playing time at BYU . . . . it's the unique combination of playing next to a player like AJ and who you'd have to compete with to get that playing time.
I believe that championship teams need a couple of stars like AJ, some glue guys who stay in the system for three or four years, and some specialized role players. I believe that is the key to success. So, I'd like to see some kind of combination of those players next year.
I am excited to see who this coaching staff chooses to bring in next year and how they fit into the system. It's a GREAT time to be a Cougar sports* fan**.
*For the Utes out there, I don't include skiing and gymnastics as real sports.
** Now, let's get BYU baseball on the same page as basketball and football.
