I have told people "this might hurt a little, but it may be that you need a
storage unit because you lack discipline. To do this right, sell everything you can that has any worth, dump the rest. Then, deposit $100 a month into an account you control where you put the proceeds from the items you sold. Pay yourself, not me. Then when the time comes that you need something you sold or disposed of, determine whether it's important enough to you to spend some of that money on it. If it is, you're all set. If it's not, then keep on paying yourself instead of me" Every person I've felt comfortable enough to say this to and looks to me as if they can't afford a unit has paused and then said "nah, I just want a unit for my junk" Clearly there is no way they would have the discipline to do what I suggest, and they know it.

To your suggestion, most of these people are not equipped to make a move to a larger residence to house their junk. Their shoes are cast in concrete. They're struggling to keep their head above water and would never qualify for a home or likely even a new apartment rental.
