I was 11. It's the first game I remember going to and have memories of the actual game. I had only previously been the BYU-UTEP game in 1983 and the BYU-Temple in 1987.
I remember Fred Whittingham rolling over pile and continuing towards the end zone. Refs ruled him down, but his knees never touched the ground. The guys in front of us were yelling that his knees never hit and the play should have continued.
I remember Chuck Cutler catching a TD at the goal line where he caught it and then kind of fell backwards into the endzone. The following summer Cutler came to speak at a military conference at 29 Palms. He stayed at our house for a few days around the conference as my Dad was a chaplain at the time. I think he stayed in my room. So it was pretty cool that I had to give up my bed to a football player. He humored me when I tried to tell him all about his football successes and even signed a poster for me, "Spiff, my favorite fan."
