A true competitor never really competes against others as much as he does compete against himself, perfecting his own craft and seeking to improve his mental and physical abilities regardless of others. See Kobe, MJ, LeBron, Tom Brady, Payton Manning etc. They all say the same thing.
What someone cannot be at the same time is this: genuinely caring about someone but at the same time losing his temper and raging against them because of a sport.
Do I want Brian fighting for our program? Sure I guess. What I want more though, for everyone, is to become their best selves. And that always means giving up the natural man in each of us.
