If it interferes with the play it would have been a different penalty
Rule 9-1-3: “No person subject to the rules, including coaches, team personnel, and substitutes, shall contact an opponent or otherwise interfere with play from the sidelines. Physical interference with a player on the field is a foul, and if deemed flagrant, the offending person shall be disqualified.”

As it stood they simply called it a unsportsmanlike penalty. Obviously the what if changes a lot if it actually came down to that.
