From my experience there is a direct correlation between mistakes and overconfidence.
Especially when mistakes snowball like they did in that game. If you don't want to buy that then fine.
It should be no surprise that in the US military the special ops group with the highest casualty rate (and it's not even close) is also by far the cockiest. You see them in person and there is a clear difference in the mentality they take into their training, their decision making, and the way they prepare for the unforeseen.
