You just never know. We went through our Crowton years and were saved by Bronco. If Bronco hadn’t panned out, imagine what it might have been like.
And over the years we’ve seen good football programs go into the spin cycle with lots of coaching changes and mediocrity. See Miami (they are finally pulling out of it), Florida State, VaTech, Texas (before Sark), USC (before Pete), Michigan (before Harbaugh) and Bama (before Saban). All those programs are light years better than Utah historically and all went dark for an extended period of time. Even with all the fan support, football “DNA”, etc.
Whitt is retiring soon and if it is this year, he could be leaving them in a bad place. Transfer portal makes it easy for core “Whitt” guys to bail, amplifying the situation.
Might Scalley be a great coach? Sure, it is possible. It is just as likely that their program sucks for a time. There are lots of examples of good programs falling into an abyss after a legendary coach retires.
Who knows.
