He’s not a great recruiter (look at recruiting)
He hasn’t been good at making staff decisions and he has thus far made lazy hires/hired his buddies (look at all the issues he’s had, Tuiaki being the most egregious)
He’s not good at the details (look at all the issues the team has had, discipline, timeouts, cleats, clock management, etc)
At any other power program he would have been fired long ago. Fans have a right to be unsatisfied and hesitant to buy-in to him after his 9 years.
Personally, I felt like Grimes came in and saved him the first time. Installed discipline, got the Oline back to being good. Grimes wasn’t a good playcaller, which is fine. But he’s a good coach.
After grimes left things fell apart again and tuiaki really bottomed out.
Hill had to come in and save Kalani again. Been a good recruiter and great defensive coach.
Arod has been up and down. He wasn’t good at Utah, but has had some good seasons here. 2021 specifically where the offense was 6th most efficient offense in the country.
But last year was bad. Oline was terrible. He’s over the entire offense so he owns the bad line. Qb play was awful and qb recruiting has been poor.
This year, he seems to have improved quite a lot. It’s been a prove-it year for both him and Kalani. So far they are both passing the test.
And good thing because it’s been a really fun year so far. I’m hoping they both continue to succeed.
But at the same time, at this point Kalani needs to have more than one good year out of every 4. Needs to prove he can consistently do it. And my personal belief is that most of this improvement is because of Hill.
