In places like Utah with heavy LDS influence or anywhere really there is a major
difference in someone who’s never been a member and someone who’s a former member. That’s the distinction the nickname/category is used for. Different perspective, experience, even sometimes treatment by members and friends.

I’m not making any kind of judgement or anything about it, just saying it’s a useful distinction in social/cultural discussions.

And people in all areas of life come up with lingo/colloquialisms, especially online.
