admit it, Utah is a program that competes at the top of college football. It feels like Kyle is able to squeeze maybe even more than the sum of the parts out of his teams, particularly on defense. It's not like any of Kyle's coordinators have gone and become head coaches or even been coordinators at blue blood schools in the big 10 or sec. I could be wrong, but I don't usually hear about them being high tier coaching candidates.
What I'm trying to highlight is that over the last maybe 8 years or so, BYU has had a disproportionate amount of NFL talent but we haven't had even one magical season. We got a little unlucky with Taysom always getting hurt, the Lopini fumbles against BSU, the list can go one of just some bad luck that happened, but some of it was unquestionably bad coaching.
I could be wrong, but I do think that we ever utilized all of that talent to get the most out of it, and in my mind, that falls on the head coach. The defense this year has some awesome players, but we shouldn't be this good. Jay is getting more than the sum of the parts out of this defense, which is something that Kalani has never done at BYU or when he was at Oregon State.
