We went 4 months ago. Here's our 1-day itinerary
- Train from Secaucus Junction NJ to Grand Central Station.

- Walk to the "Edge" (sky scraper with a glass floor on the sky deck. Got discounted tix through city pass, bundle with 9/11 tix. )

- Subway to SE corner of Central Park. Walked across park and over to the temple.

- Gray's Papaya Hot Dog stand and LaVain's bakery for lunch.

- Subway to the East side of the Broadway Bridge.

- Walk the Broadway Bridge all the way to 9/11 museum. Stopped at a street gift shop en route to buy NY souvenirs.

- 9/11 museum (outstanding btw).

- Grabbed pizza from a shop nearby and took it to the Staten Island Ferry

- Rode the ferry, ate pizza, and took pictures of the statute of liberty at dusk. Returned in the next ferry (all free).

-Subway to Times Square to get the evening ambiance there.

- Train back to NJ.

Subway cost for the day was $45 for 6 of us. Distance walked was 11 miles.
