Because there's no viable path to acquire star players to pair with him outside
of the draft. And at his age, any star they draft won't be ready to lead a playoff team until Lauri is past his prime. Plus, it will be much easier to tank to get a good pick without him.

There are other ways to get a "star" player than drafting one. Maybe Markkanen is the Jazz's "star" player and you want
