You don’t necessarily need to pay a guide if you find someone that is proficient to go with several times. A guide
could be great money spent though. If you are focusing on trout fishing in streams for for now, then I recommend a book for you, Handbook of Hatches by Dave Hughes. Trout eat bugs (also fish which you can imitate with streamers, similar to lure fishing) so to get decent at fly fishing learn about the bugs in our western rivers and about trout behavior. The mechanics of fly fishing and reading water can come from being out there. But like anything you probably can learn a ton from YouTube. But it won’t replace trial and error on the water. Fly fishing ranges from incredibly simple scenarios where it’s easy to catch a dozen fish, to super technical where the fish won’t give your fly a look. There is nymphing, dry fly fishing, steamer fishing, swinging flies, and more, and all sorts of combinations of these. Your background in fishing will pay huge dividends for you. There is nothing quite like seeing a rising trout in the stream and stalking it with a carefully placed dry fly, and when that fish slurps your fly off the water it can be a zen like experience. Anyway, with this said I would not limit yourself to fly fishing for trout in streams. You can stalk carp in shallow lake flats (like bone fishing), you can bass and bluegill fish in ponds, etc etc. I lived in Iowa and back there I would fly fish for crappie, bass, panfish, catfish, etc. Super fun. Don’t overlook small stream fly fishing. The larger streams and rivers in the state can get very crowded sometimes. It’s a blast to have small trout slashing at your fly on tiny creeks and small streams. And you got to head to the Green River below Flaming Gorge sometime. It’s big water but thousands and thousands of fish per mile below the dam, mind boggling numbers TBH. Ok, sorry for the incoherent rant. I guess I need to go fly fishing soon.
