I think the hotel is being fair. The broken soap holder was a risk. But I would
put some blame on your son for cutting himself on it.
A reasonable person might ask for a room change or put a washcloth over the broken fixture.
Heck! My wife asks for a room change if she sees a hair in the room.

The family obviously didn’t think it was risk even though they knew it was damaged. They still chose to use the shower.
