The point is that it's much easier to deceive guys that are more self centered

Than those that are committed to a greater whole. Self centered people are much quicker to believe the enticing of charlatan's. That's why so many kids are going into the portal believing there's something greater than toughing it out for success And quickly finding it was all a lie and deception.
