2021 was an anomaly. Be in denial if U want. At least D and O have the correct
number of coaches now.
U might want to go look at who left the team after 2020 to pursue NFL. Tough to fault guys like ZW and Dax Milne who got drafted / made a roster.
A few left that in retrospect, should not have. These early departures hit the defense before the season started. Then came the injuries. Best DB - career ending vs AZ week 1. Best LB - season ending vs ASU week 3. Etc.
The defense will rebound nicely in 2022. I would put money on it.
At BYU, defense will always get 2nd fiddle to the offense relative to resources. That is just the way it is. Otherwise Sol Jay would be on defense last year or sooner. Tanner Wall is a walk-in making noise. Instead of being buried on the WR depth chart, he would be a DB. Allgeier would have been left at linebacker and Hirkley would probably move to D.
That is the way it is. Fans want offense and BYU can get QBs, TE, FB, WR, and OL. Just thin at RB. Organize around your recruiting strengths. On D - that means line backer and maybe safety/hybrids. Thin at Corner. Decent but not elite DL.

Those 50 or 60 'worse' DCs just might be better with BYU's resources too instead of on a G5 Sun Belt team.
