in the initial CFP poll. Remember when Bronco said that he wished rankings wouldn't come out until mid-October, 4 games or so into the season? Now the only rankings that matter are the CFP rankings. So all of you who think the CFP polls will follow AP and Coaches polls, I'm sorry to let you down. At least it will be softly over the next 2 weeks (seems to be the timeline for 2020, right?)
The CFP selection committee consists of 13 members, and are touted as "high-integrity football experts, with experience as coaches, student-athletes, college administrators and journalists, along with sitting athletics directors." In the past, Ronnie Lott and R.C. Slocum have been members.
Of course they use the AP and Coach's Polls in their decision making. However, if after watching the games this weekend you don't think they will find 10 teams better than BYU, I think the blue goggles are a bit snug. Looking over our shoulder, you could argue that Miami, Indiana, Oregon, Georgia (yes, even with 2 losses), Wisconsin and OSU ALL have better wins than we do.
We pass the eye test, so that is important in the eyes of the committee. So I think we will settle out in the top 15. Assuming those in the AP poll stay ahead of us, I predict that Miami (win over GT next week), Oregon (beat UCLA), Wisconsin (beat #23 NW), and OSU (beat #18 OU) all will jump us. That puts us at 12. Indiana (close loss to tOSU), 2 loss Georgia (beat MSST). should stay behind us. A wildcard is where the committee will put us within the undefeated "Group of 5" teams, like Cincinnatti, CC, Marshall, Liberty. I think Cincy stays ahead.
At that point, some schools might need games against a top 15 team to try to plead their case for the CFP, most notably Oregon, Wisc, IU, Cincy. Those are who Tom may have a chance to schedule in December. If Cincy really wanted to make waves, they could schedule us on the 28th as a showdown in the CFP top 15, where we both would certainly be. A win over us might catapult them into the CFP.
