It's a reason, just not one that you like.
There are lots of great non-member coaches who are also great men, who have good morals and values, that could fit in at BYU. Having a non-member coach would be a boost to recruiting, and I think it would help BYU's image. We've had plenty of non-LDS assistant coaches before, and I don't think they did any damage to the program, simply because they weren't Mormon.

We're missing out on a lot of great coaches who are also great men but might not necessarily be members of our faith. I think many of them could fit in at BYU and support and sustain the honor code and encourage the players to keep it. Someone doesn't have to be LDS to do that.

We've had numerous non-LDS assistant coaches as well as athletes. I'm sure most of them were great people, and did a great job representing BYU despite not being LDS. I'm sure we could find a similar non-LDS HC who could focus on coaching football and molding young men, someone who could respect our values and beliefs and uphold them, even though he might not necessarily share them or agree with all of them. Obviously he'd have to hire a good PR guy to make sure he didn't say anything that could be construed as criticism of the Church.
