A few comments
One reason BYU underperformed at bowls in the 70’s was that the games weren’t taken seriously enough. Edwards and staff saw the bowl games as team rewards. A WAC championship was the most worthy goal. Translation- Let’s have fun first at the Bowl and if we win that will be nice. As the losses began to pile up, more fan pressure and player pressure to win happened. Thank heavens for Jim McMahon’s performance and antics, which resulted in The Miracle Bowl. Please note, I’m not badmouthing Coach Edwards. Without him, BYU football would be nothing. The let’s have fun at the Bowl game was just the attitude early on.
Miami- I was there with my parents, my 5 year old son and several siblings. It was my mom’s birthday. She always said that win was the BYU players gift to her. (More electric from start to finish than any home game I’ve attended)
