Let me give you expert advice having raised 4 kids
Kid 1 - Would only fall sleep sitting in a chair with me for the first 2 to 4 months, but I could put him down. After that he started sleeping in a crib on his own regularly.
Kid 2 - Basically didn’t sleep for over a year. I don’t know how she survived, but I don’t think she slept more than 2 hours at a time for at least a year. It was brutal.
Kid 3 - Needed to be put to sleep for the first 2 weeks or so, but would go down in her crib/bassinet just fine and slept well.
Kid 4 - Was a sleeping champ. Slept so much that we thought something might be wrong with her. Slept alone in the crib, being held, in her car seat, anywhere and everywhere and nothing woke her up.

My take is that it’s a crapshoot and sometimes you get lucky, sometimes you don’t. I’m very dubious that there is anything you can really do to affect an infants sleep other than keeping as quiet as possible once they’re asleep.

So in summary…good luck. Welcome to parenthood.
