This more things change, the more they stay the same.

BYU's records vs P5 teams by head coach:

LaVell: 34-45-1 (0.431)
Crowton: 5-6-0 (0.455)
Bronco: 18-23-0 (0.439)
Kalani: 18-23-0 (0.439)

Times may have changed, but the win% really hasn't.

He shouldn't because utah wasn't receiving P5 money or a P5 recruiting advantage. They weren't even a good G5 team then.
