He's defended because he's a likeable guy. People want him to succeed.
So many good coaches come across as absolute jerks. Sitake seems like such a good guy, and the sort players are likely to think about as a mentor and father figure for the rest of their lives. He's the sort of man who should have success as a coach. So people are hoping he can figure things out and get his program on more solid footing.
