First - It is a little strange to say that having an LDS coach hurts recruiting. In football circles Bronco is very respected and LaVelle is a legend. Yet you think that they hurt recruiting? You may as well say that the HC and the Sponsor institution of BYU hurt recruiting.
Second - There are many great coaches and good men that are out there and might come to BYU if asked. However, I doubt that one of them would really understand the honor code or the culture at BYU. Even LDS coaches (and people) have a tough time with it. I don't think Kryle would have been able to pull it off any better than Crowton did - unless you want to have "NO DUIs" added to the HC.
Third - Bronco has been here 8 years and had had 10+ win seasons 5 times and has never had a losing season ( I actually count 2005 as a losing season but statistically it's not). He also has 6 bowl wins in 8 tries, and before you say they were terrible teams, OR, OR-ST and UCLA were 1 conference win away from the PAC-10 championship and AZ was in the top 1/2. That is not a good record, that is an amazing record. Better than any coach you said you wanted.
I swear, the more I actually look at the numbers the more I am impressed with Bronco. Some people here should drop their emotional reactions and look at actual statistics.
