He’s not using semantics to misrepresent. There’s a material difference between

BYU taking funds from donors no strings attached and then electing to use those funds to pay coaches (among other things), and universities who engage donors directly in the hiring and firing process (donations with significant strings attached). It’s nuanced, but a materially different approach.
